About Alyssa Swanson

Cows make milk. Writers spin ideas into gold. It’s like breathing. Many of us are deceptively clumsy on land/social situations, lumbering like elephant seals, but get us into the water/writing landscape and we’re grace personified. I am so happy you’re here. Let me know if you’d like to work with me on any special project you can dream up.

I am a lifelong Southern California resident. I have been writing professionally for over 20 years, primarily for health websites and magazines. I’m currently working on a novel. I enjoy permaculture, tending my meadow garden, basking in freezing water wherever I can find it, and spending time in the desert under the stars. I live in Orange County with my two teenage sons and a black Lab named Bear.

Who am I? I’m a writer and an MFA candidate at Sierra Nevada University. I’m a mother, a guerilla gardener, a sea creature who somehow found a way to live on land. The animal I most identify with is an octopus, of course. Alien life, not unlike the fungi kingdom (of which I am also a fan).  Below, the gardens at Esalen during Writer’s Camp with Cheryl Strayed, Samantha Dunn and Pam Houston.
